Is it time to replace the battery?

Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to keep 80% of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions, and iPhone 15 batteries at 1,000 cycles. If Maximum Capacity is well below 80%, or the phone shuts down unexpectedly, a replacement is reasonable. A 'Performance management applied' note means the phone has already had an unexpected shutdown.

What does 'Unknown part' or a non-genuine battery message mean?

After a battery swap, Apple's Parts and Service History (Settings > General > About, iPhone XR, XS and later) shows the battery as Genuine, Used or Unknown. Apple says an Unknown battery may be non-genuine, not working as expected, or not linked to your phone. Apple also says that if a battery is unverified, the battery health figure may not be accurate.

So a shop that shows you '100%' after fitting a non-genuine battery has not proved anything. The label in About is the better check.

Why a cheap battery can be a real risk

Apple says a non-genuine replacement battery might be poorly made, previously used, damaged or the wrong battery for your model, and that this can cause low capacity, a poor fit, problems after updates or while charging, and safety issues. It also says only a trained technician should replace an iPhone battery, because lithium-ion damage can cause overheating or fire. Do not try a home battery swap with a cheap kit.

• Ask how long the warranty on the battery is, in writing.
• Check Battery Health and the Parts and Service History label before you leave.
• Watch for swelling, heat or a screen that lifts in the first weeks.
