Why Is My Phone Heating Up? Causes, Fixes and Summer Heat Tips

Last updated: 19 October 2026

Why is my phone heating up, and when should I worry?

Every phone gets warm. Gaming, video calls, navigation, charging and setting up a new phone all make heat, and Apple, Samsung and Google all call that normal. The problem is heat that keeps building, heat with the screen off, or a phone that gets hot in the sun and then goes on a fast charger. In a Pakistani summer that last one is easy to do without thinking.

Normal warmth: what makes every phone warm

Apple, Samsung and Google list the same everyday causes. If one of these is happening, warmth is expected and goes away when the task ends.

  • Setting up a new phone, restoring a backup, or a big software update.
  • Games, long camera or video recording, streaming high-quality video.
  • Navigation for a long time, especially in a car in the sun.
  • Wireless charging, fast charging, or charging while doing any of the above.
  • Hotspot or tethering for a long time.
  • Weak signal or roaming. Samsung lists weak-signal areas as a cause of heat.

Why is my phone heating up while charging?

Some warmth while charging is normal. Samsung says both the phone and the charger can rise in temperature while charging. Things that make it worse, according to Samsung and Apple: a damaged or non-genuine charger or cable, metal or magnets on a wireless pad, a case that traps heat, a dirty or wet charging port, and heavy use while fast charging.

Samsung says that if the phone overheats near the USB port, the cable or the port may be damaged, so replace the cable with an authentic one or have the port checked. Treat heat that is concentrated at the port as a warning sign, not normal warmth.

What the phone does when it gets too hot

Phones protect themselves. Apple says an iPhone that gets too hot may slow or stop charging, dim or black out the screen, weaken the cellular signal, disable the camera flash and reduce performance. It may show a Temperature warning, or a Charging On Hold message. Samsung says a Galaxy may dim the screen, slow down, pause charging, close apps or power off to cool down. Google says a Pixel may turn off the flash, reduce mobile data or Wi-Fi including 5G, and turn off if it keeps heating.

Those are safeguards, not faults. They are also a sign that you should stop what you are doing.

How to cool a hot phone safely

This is what the three companies tell you to do.

  • Unplug it if it is charging.
  • Close the heavy app (game, camera, navigation) and stop using the phone for a while.
  • Take it out of the case.
  • Move it out of the sun to a cooler place. Apple says that if a temperature warning appears, turn the phone off and let it cool.
  • Wait until it has cooled down completely before using or charging it again.
  • None of Apple, Samsung or Google tell you to put a phone in the fridge or freezer. They say to move it somewhere cooler and let it cool, so do that.

Settings that reduce heat

  • Samsung: Settings > Device care > Optimise now, Power saving, and Put unused apps to sleep. Samsung also suggests the Light performance profile to cut heat and power use.
  • Pixel 6 and later: Google offers a phone temperature check in Settings, and suggests lower brightness, Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, and a case made for your exact model.
  • iPhone: Low Power Mode cuts background work, and Apple suggests removing certain cases while charging if the phone gets hot.
  • All phones: update apps and software, and turn off Bluetooth, GPS or hotspot when you are not using them.

Phones in Pakistan's summer heat

Apple designs iPhone for ambient temperatures of 0°C to 35°C and says use in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. Samsung gives the same 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C) range for Galaxy. Pakistani summers go well past that. Dawn reported on 30 May 2026 that Dadu set a record of 51.5°C, with Jacobabad at 51°C, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

You cannot avoid the weather, but you can avoid the worst combinations:

  • Do not leave the phone in a parked car, on the dashboard or on a motorbike phone holder in direct sun. Apple says parked-car temperatures can go beyond the phone's safe storage limit of 45°C.
  • Do not charge a phone that is already hot from outdoors. Let it cool indoors first. Apple says charging in high ambient temperatures can damage the battery further, and Battery University recommends charging between 10°C and 30°C for best results.
  • During load-shedding evenings without a fan, charge on a hard surface near a window or fan, not on a bed or sofa cushion.
  • Use a slower charger, or turn off fast charging, on very hot days if your phone allows it.
  • Keep it out of tight trouser pockets and bags in the afternoon sun. Samsung lists bags, pockets and bedding as places where phones heat up more easily.

When heat means something is wrong

Get the phone checked if it is hot with the screen off and nothing running, if it gets hot within minutes of light use, if it keeps shutting down, or if the screen or back cover starts lifting. Google says a lifting screen can mean a swollen battery and that you should not press on it or open the phone yourself. Samsung says that if a device is still too warm to touch after cooling steps, contact Samsung support.

Questions people ask

Why is my phone heating up for no reason?

There is usually a reason you cannot see: a background update or backup, weak signal, a hotspot left on, or a hot room. Check Settings > Battery for an app using a lot of power. If it is hot with nothing running, have the battery checked.

Is it normal for my phone to get hot while charging?

Warm is normal, especially with fast or wireless charging. Too hot to hold, or hot at the charging port, is not. Unplug it, take off the case, let it cool, and try a genuine charger and cable.

Can I put my hot phone in the fridge?

Apple, Samsung and Google do not recommend it. They all say to stop charging, close apps, move the phone somewhere cooler and let it cool down on its own.

What temperature is safe for a phone?

Apple says iPhone is designed for ambient temperatures of 0°C to 35°C and storage between -20°C and 45°C. Samsung gives the same 0°C to 35°C operating range for Galaxy devices.
