Why the PTA check matters in Quetta

The News named Quetta, with Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar, as a city where smuggled, non-PTA phones are distributed through cell phone markets (10 May 2024). That does not mean a given shop sells them. It means you should check every set yourself.

Buying tips and PTA check in Quetta

Check PTA status before you pay, not after. Dial *#06# on the phone, match that IMEI to the box and the bill, then send the IMEI by SMS to 8484. The PTA status guide explains each reply.

The News reported on 10 May 2024 that smuggled, non-PTA phones are distributed through cell phone markets in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta and other cities, and that some are 'patched' with duplicated or cloned IMEIs to get past PTA's DIRBS system. The same report says patching is illegal under PECA 2016, and quotes PTA as having blocked 35 million IMEIs by 30 December 2023. A patched phone can work today and be blocked later.

If a phone is non-PTA and you plan to register it yourself, look up the FBR amount in the PTA tax guide before you agree a price.

• Ask in plain words: PTA approved, non-PTA, or patched?
• Get a bill with the shop name, the IMEI and a phone number.
• Put your own SIM in and make a call before you leave the counter.
• For a used phone, test the screen, cameras, speakers, charging port and battery; the inspection guide has a checklist.
• Do not send an advance to a seller you have not met.
