What should I check first when buying a used phone?
The IMEI. Dial *#06#, make sure it matches the box and Settings, and check every IMEI with PTA by SMS to 8484 or on DIRBS.
How do I know an iPhone is not iCloud locked?
Ask the seller to sign out of their Apple ID and turn off Find My, then reset the phone in front of you and set it up with your own Apple ID.
Is it safe to pay in advance?
No. Never pay before you have seen and checked the phone. Advance payment is the most common used-phone scam.
